Door Reverses Before Fully Closing

DIY Friendly10-30 minutes

When your garage door starts closing but reverses before reaching the floor, the safety sensors are usually the culprit. The sensors are misaligned, dirty, or blocked. If sensors check out, the close force or limit settings may need adjustment.

Common Symptoms

  • Door reverses partway down
  • Door reverses different amounts each time
  • Opener lights blink after reversal
  • Works fine with wall button held down continuously

Possible Causes

  • Safety sensors misaligned
  • Dirty sensor lenses
  • Something blocking sensor beam
  • Sensor wires damaged
  • Close force setting too sensitive
  • Track obstruction creating resistance

How to Fix It

1

Check sensor indicator lights

Look at both sensors near the floor. Both should have solid lights. If one is blinking, that sensor needs attention.

2

Clear the sensor path

Remove any objects that might be partially blocking the invisible beam between sensors—even small items or cobwebs.

3

Clean sensor lenses

Wipe both sensor lenses with a soft cloth. Dust, dirt, and moisture accumulation are common causes.

4

Realign sensors

Loosen the wing nut on the blinking sensor. Adjust its angle until the light becomes solid, then retighten.

5

Check sensor wires

Inspect wires for damage. A staple through the wire or rodent chewing can cause intermittent problems.

6

Adjust close force if needed

If sensors are fine, locate the force adjustment screw on the opener. Turn the down-force screw clockwise slightly.

When to Call a Professional

  • Sensors appear fine but problem persists
  • Wires need replacement inside walls
  • Door has significant track or roller issues
  • Springs seem weak or unbalanced

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does holding the wall button down work?

Holding the button continuously bypasses the safety sensor check—the door will close regardless. This is designed for emergencies but shouldn't be your regular solution.

Can sunlight affect my sensors?

Yes. Direct sunlight can overwhelm the infrared beam. If your problem happens only at certain times of day, install a small shade over the sensor facing the sun.

My sensors are aligned but one light is still dim. Why?

A dim or flickering light usually indicates a wiring problem or a failing sensor. Check wire connections first, then consider replacing the sensor.
